Heritage Cricketers retain their title as Cup champions at the

2023 Phuket International Cricket Sixes

Finals Day Report - Sunday 23rd April 2023

Heritage Cricketers retained their title as Cup holders at the 2023 Phuket International Cricket Sixes. The side from Dhaka in Bangladesh proved too strong in the face of a valiant performance of Blue Tree Cricket Team in the final as they ran out winners by 31 runs.

While Heritage batted brilliantly throughout the 4 days, the Player of the Match award in the final went to Syed Shahed who took 2-4 in the final over with the ball. It crowned another superb performance from a team who continue to be great ambassadors, playing the game in exactly the right way.

The Bowl was played between the two losing Cup semi-finalists and it saw Gauhati Town Club overcome Mumbai Strikers in an all Indian encounter to lift the trophy with an over to spare, chasing down a target of 62. Deep Borah, who had a fine tournament, was named Player of the Match for his retirement on 32. Earlier Strikers had been dismantled by Heritage, with Town Club finding Blue Tree a formidable act.

The third tier Plate saw House of Cricket, fall 6 runs short of the 70-2 posted by victors, Cricket Club of Dibrugarh, of Assam in a thrilling finish. The side from of Skema in South Africa looked set for victory until an incredible 3-3 in the final over from Player of the Match, Pankaj Saikia pulled off a remarkable win.

In the earlier Plate semi-finals, Dibrugarh disposed of Hong Kong tourists, Lamma CC, while Calcutta Swimming Club whose form over the 4 days was up and down like the Andaman waves, were beaten by House of Cricket.

The Spoon had earlier seen a 3 team round robin, in which 91 Yards Club ended top of the tree to collect the spoils after defeating CBB CC and Incredible 7. The adjudicating panel gave the Player of the Group award to Imdad Hussain who scored 33 off 10 balls in the decisive game.

The ever present international CBB line up saw off the most sporting entrants from Singapore in the other match. 91 Yards Club made it a treble for Assam, leading no doubt to some celebrations around Bangtao where the teams are staying as well as on the flights home.

The Player of the Tournament award was presented to Manoj Yadav of Heritage Cricketers for his total 204 tournament runs and 7 wickets in a superb all-round display, while the prestigious Spirit of Cricket Accolade went to umpire Clive Howard.

At the conclusion of the presentations, ACST Chairman Michael Maher was delighted with the tournament. “To see so many friends old and new back playing in Phuket, where the ACST first staged a tournament back in 2004, has been tremendous. The cricket has been of a fantastic standard, as has the camaraderie and sportsmanship between all participants”.

“I would like to thank the locals at the ACG for the use of the ground, my ACST partners, and all officials as well as all our sponsors and tournament hotels for their loyal support”. Mr. Maher continued.

The action heats up on a scorching Saturday full of twists and turns

at the ACST Phuket International Cricket Sixes

Day 3 Report

It was a fascinating Saturday at the Phuket International Cricket Sixes, with several unpredictable results, as the 11 team table changed several times which left questions still unanswered owing to a late finish.

The teams reconvened to finish Round 1 at the Alan Cook Ground in Phuket, as they vied for positions on the ladder, prior to the top 8 breaking away and playing one further game with points added to the table to see who competes for Cup and Plate.

Newcomers Mumbai Strikers had two games in the first stage and showed their considerable abilities in dismantling Incredible 7 and then 91 Yards Club before Gauhati Town Club ended their fun in Round 2 with a fine win.

The question being, will it be enough to seal the victors of that clash from Assam a place in the Cup. It will be answered in the morning, and it depends if Calcutta Swimming Club can defend the total that they have set Cricket Club of Dibrugarh. The Calcutta outfit discarded their arm bands and put in two brilliant earlier performances to beat Gauhati Town Club and CBB CC.

Blue Tree Cricket Club sealed their Cup place by seeing off the challenge of House of Cricket and then Lamma CC, who themselves had a fantastic first half of the day when defeating CBB CC and the Incredible 7. All eyes are on the holders Heritage Club, with the Bangladeshi’s posting a remarkable 101 without loss in their clash with the Dibrugarh side prior to defeating House of Cricket.

An exciting Finals Day awaits, in which CBB CC, Incredible 7, and 91 Yards Club will play for the Spoon.

At the conclusion of a very long day’s play, Ian Liddell, ACST Tournament Referee and Director, was a happy man. “We have seen some excellent cricket throughout with more to come tomorrow on Finals Day. It’s been great to welcome sides from around the cricketing world, with a strong contingent of Indian sides reflecting how that nation is looked upon as a leader in cricket all around the world.”

Blue Tree Cricket Team maintain early form at the

ACST Phuket International Cricket Sixes

Day 2 Report

Local representatives, Blue Tree Cricket Team, with an influence of Pattaya based players lead the ladder at the completion of Day 2 of the Phuket International Cricket Sixes.

They put out a statement of intent with their hammering of Assam’s Cricket Club of Dibrugarh who posted a respectful total of 62. However, Blue Tree passed the score in just 3.3 overs as the opening partnership of Ashan Fonseka and Ahmad Mughal shone as brightly as the Phuket sun.

Meanwhile, Cup holders from 2019, Heritage Cricketers, again provided evidence that they will not be relinquishing their title easily, with a couple of victories.

The team from Dhaka in Bangladesh who also won the ACST Siam International Cricket Sevens in November, sunk The Calcutta Swimming Club as they amassed 88-2 from their 5 overs as Manoj Yadav retired on 34. In their later match, Heritage then proved far too strong for 91 Yards Club in the final match of the day, chasing down the target of 64 with ease.

Just four other matches were played in Round One at the Alan Cook Ground. Mumbai Strikers, who look a decent punt for honours, defeating Lamma CC, one of the sides who competed in the first tournament back in 2004. 91 Yards Club will feel better for their first victory at the event, especially after their later defeat, as they proved too strong for Incredible 7 in the opening match of the day.

Gauhati Town Club got over the line in a thrilling finish off the final delivery against House of Cricket, after Deep Borah had set his side up in the reply after a fine knock in the first dig by Michael Payne.

Once again, the Friday of the tournament featured a separate match, this time a T15 encounter between the Indians and The Rest who are competing over the four days. The Indians scored 148-6 with Borah and Cyril getting the runs. It proved to be too little with The Rest reaching the target for the loss of 2 wickets with five overs to spare. Salman Hossain Emon and Benjamin Potgieter proved to be the stars with the bat in the chase.

It’s a great opening day as friends and teams reunite

at the Phuket International Cricket Sixes

Day 1 Report

Cricket was the winner on Day 1 at the long-awaited continuation of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST) Phuket International Cricket Sixes, which was last staged in 2019. Teams from far and wide assembled to get stuck into the action at the Alan Cook Ground (ACG) on the paradise island.

11 teams are competing in the event over 4 days, with Round One action seeing all sides play 4 matches, before being seeded to play for honours. Local entrants Blue Tree Cricket team lead the ladder after seeing off Gauhati Town Club and fellow participants from Assam in India, Cricket Club of Dibrugarh with Ashan Fonseka scoring a retirement which was matched by Shad Wahid in the second of the victories.

South Africa is represented at the event by House of Cricket, and they also can be happy with their efforts. Cricket Club of Dibrugarh defeated them with the penultimate ball of the opening encounter hit by Saurav Bagawati after a dazzling 12 ball retirement of 33 from Kamakhya Saikia. House of Cricket responded to take down Gauhati Town Club as a fine batting display from Avumile Mnci rendered the total of 81 unmanageable.

Cup holders Heritage Cricketers of Bangladesh fired a warning to those wanting to take their crown with a crushing defeat of Lamma CC, as Manoj Yadav scored 36 of the posted total of 90.

The final match of the day was another thriller as in a battle of newcomers, Mumbai Strikers overcame Calcutta Swimming Club off the final ball. Yasovardhan Kanodia looked set to send his side for a first win with his 31, but excellent batting from Vinod Muthukumar proved decisive.

The other couple of encounters on the opening day involved perennial favourites CBB CC, who had a mixed start. They defeated debutants 91 Yards Club of Assam as Dixie Joy starred, but they were overcome by mixed gender side, Incredible 7, with Cyril and Rajes seeing the Singapore team home.

Play will start tomorrow at the ACG at 9.45am where food and refreshments are available. Spectators are welcome and admission is free, with Friday’s fixtures featuring a T20 game between Indian participants in the tournament against the rest at 11.30am.

ACST Siam International Cricket Sevens 2022

Finals Day Wrap: Sunday 27th November

Heritage CC win the Cup at the Siam International Cricket Sevens

Heritage CC are the Cup winners at the 2022 ACST Siam International Cricket Sevens. The side from Bangladesh played terrific cricket throughout. Sadly, with the score on 18-1 for 1.2 overs the heavens opened against Raju’s VII. Heritage were crowned as winners by virtue of winning most games and accumulating most points in the group stage.

The semi-finals saw the champions sail past the youngsters of Lamphun, who once again won the hearts of the attending participants while Raju’s VII revenged the previous days last ball loss to end the hopes of Lamma CC of Hong Kong.

The Trophy final saw a thriller as CBB SCs and CBB SKs both scored 66 from their 5 overs. However, the SCs won on virtue of losing fewer wickets after Steve Christie had retired on 34 to win the player of the final award.

Deepak Khatri was named as Player of the Tournament for his 122 runs in 6 innings, while the prestigious Spirit of Cricket Award went to Zial Alam Rony.

A special presentation was made to Raju of Raju’s Cricket Club, winners of the previous Siam Sevens, who has supported the 2022 events, with an invitational side playing under his name.

The morning games saw the completion of the initial round robin stage, with Heritage CC winning their couple of matches against CBB SKs and then Lamphun, who had earlier defeated CBB SKs, while Lamma were too strong for CBB SCs who were also on the wrong end to Raju’s VII.

Monies were raised throughout the three days for the Thailand Junior Cricket Development Fund who assist in the development of junior cricket in Northern Thailand. The fund sponsored Lamphun in this event.

ACST Chairman, Michael ‘Cat’ Maher, was delighted at the ground following play. "It has been a pleasure to be able to put on a tournament once again after an enforced absence of three years. Every participant has been an absolute credit to the game of cricket as the tournament has been played in great spirit as our ethos of “friendships through cricket” was enacted. Heritage CC were superb throughout and are worthy champions”.

“I would like to thank Neville Kendrick of sponsors Titan Finance Ltd and all the staff at the Duangtawan Hotel for their kind assistance. And on a personal note, all involved with the CBB CC on their 100th Tour bringing back so many wonderful memories.”

ACST Siam International Cricket Sevens 2022

Day One Wrap: Saturday 26th November

Lamma CC of Hong Kong lead the charge on Day One of the Siam International Cricket Sevens

Lamma CC are top of the table in dramatic fashion after Day One of the Siam International Cricket Sevens. In the final game of the day Chris Coombes came out to face the final ball after colleague Brad Tarr retired on 31, to hit a six to win the match against Raju’s VII.

Both batters starred throughout the day, as Lamma won three out of their four matches, also defeating CBB SKs, and Lamphun, sponsored by the Thailand Junior Cricket Development Fund.

Bangladesh representatives Heritage CC set the benchmark on with some scintillating cricket at the Chiang Mai Gymkhana Club grounds. The team containing former Test and ODI star Elias Sunny and T20 international player Nadif Chowdhury accumulated wins against the CBB SCs, Raju’s VII, and Lamma CC, with their game in hand likely to be vital later in the piece.

Play commenced in the competition proper on a beautiful morning following a sabbatical of three years owing to the Coronavirus pandemic, with the teams all playing each other in a round robin group to establish rankings to play for honours on Sunday’s Finals Day.

In the other games Raju’s VII saw off Lamphun and CBB SKs as they find themselves third in the standings. The other game of the day in an entertaining match CBB SCs defeated CBB SKs.

The previous afternoon had seen a T18 encounter between the CBB CC, celebrating their 100th Tour, and an All Stars side made up of other participants. The All Stars knocked off the required 69 runs for victory without loss, in a match played in excellent spirit.

ACST Phuket Cricket Week 2022 Cancelled

The Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ASCT) regret to announce the cancellation of the 2022 Phuket Cricket Sixes. This difficult decision has been made with the health and wellbeing of our customers and tourists as our priority. We feel that the regulations regarding international arrivals are still too stringent and high risk, along with the current Covid 19 situation, where Omicron is spreading quickly among the community in Thailand.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continued support and understanding. The ACST will continue to assess tournaments later in 2022 and will make any announcements as soon as we have any news.

December 2021

ACST Phuket Cricket Week 2022 Announcement

The ACST Phuket Cricket Week returns for 2022. The popular ICC award winning event will be held between Thursday 14th and Sunday 17th April 2022 at the Alan Cooke Ground.

As an organisation we are keeping a close eye on developments regarding the worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic and are acutely aware of some current restrictions in place in Thailand along with the difficulty for some to come and go from certain countries. However, we are confident that things are improving.

We have come to the decision to hold just one tournament rather than the usual Phuket International Sixes and the Thalang 7’s taking all of this into account. An announcement will be made in due course as to the actual cricket.

We wish all our supporters and friends, both old and new, the very best of health and thank you for your considered support over what has been a terribly difficult time for many people.
